The fugitives stopped their vehicle and fled on foot. The police came out of their vehicle to continue them. Two people (one of the Belgian police officers and one of the people prosecuted) were then struck by a car arriving opposite, not far from the descent of the Saint-Michel, towards Thionville.
The impact was fatal for the police officer and the fugitive. According to the first observations, they would have died instantly. The emergency services could only note the deaths. An important security perimeter has been put in place, and the road was cut in both directions a good part of the night.
“During an operation against drug trafficking”
An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. The Belgian and French authorities are now collaborating closely to shed light on this drama.
In a message posted this Wednesday on the social network X, the Belgian interior minister, Bernard Quintin, spoke: “Last night, a Belgian police officer lost his life in service during an operation against drug trafficking. Thoughts for his family, colleagues, relatives. Respect for all agents who get involved every day in dangerous circumstances to guarantee our security.”
