Moscow brings to Europe the responsibility of any failure of peace negotiations

The shadows of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart at a joint press conference at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska, August 15, 2025.

Three days after celebrating the summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, Moscow followed between prudence and mockery the meeting organized in Washington, Monday August 18, between the American president and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, then with the main European leaders.

The chief of the Kremlin, who spoke about forty minutes on the phone with Mr. Trump on the sidelines of this meeting, made no public declaration. Alone to express themselves in Moscow on the night of Monday to Tuesday, Iouri Ouchakov, advisor to Mr. Putin, simply confirmed that the two presidents discussed “The possibility of identifying the level of representatives” direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine. Translation: a possible Putin-Zelensky summit. After three technical talks meetings in Istanbul, since May, the two presidents could meet in person. A possibility hitherto rejected by the Kremlin.

“For the first time, there is a real opportunity to start negotiations with Ukraine and Europe on all the problems to be resolved to end warsays an informed source at the top in Moscow. But, now, a real headache is coming for Europeans, stuck in an ideological dead end: they defend abstract principles, while hundreds of thousands of men die in battle. This war must be stopped, in fact lost by kyiv, and not continue it until the total destruction of Ukraine. »»
