New blood donation contraindications

Did you think that a needle treatment prevented you from giving your blood? Good news: if these acts have been carried out under framed medical conditions, the waiting period is now 2 months, against 4 before.

This concerns three types of care often practiced:

  • L’acupuncturewhere fine needles are inserted on body points to relieve certain pain or imbalances.
  • Mesotherapywhich involves the injection of small amounts of drugs just under the skin, often to treat joint or circulatory pain.
  • Varice sclerosiswhich consists in injecting a product into superficial veins to make them disappear.

Because they involve skin micro-perforations, these care was previously associated with an infectious risk, justifying a longer time before being able to give.

This type of intervention can expose to local or systemic infections, especially if the needle or the injected product is not sterile. Even if the risk is very low in a medical framework, the period of 2 months makes it possible to ensure the absence of complications or silent infections.

But today, thanks to the advances in viral genomic screening (DGV) this period could be reduced without compromising patient safety.
