After months of diplomatic trial and error and attempted talks during which Russia has continued to intensify its war machine, the fate of Ukraine should be put into play again on Friday, August 15. The expected meeting between the Russian and American presidents will be held in the anchorage region, in Alaska, without the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited. The latter multiplies rallying attempts and calls to unity with its European allies to influence the summit, asking to maintain pressure on Vladimir Putin.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump said hoping to organize a trilateral summit in the wake of this first meeting in Alaska. He also threatened Russia to “Very serious consequences” If the latter refused to accept a ceasefire following their discussions.
But these threats are hardly taken seriously in Ukraine. The American president has not stopped, since his return to power in January, to repeat that he was going to sanction his Russian counterpart to force him to stop his invasion, without ever taking action. The announcement of the August 15 meeting was also revealed on the last day of an American ultimatum supposed to impose sanctions on Russia if it did not accept an immediate cease-fire on August 8. The Alaska appointment should go well, while Russian assaults on Ukraine continue.
