Big fright for two people who sailed aboard a French pleasure vessel, attacked Monday by orcas off the Basque coasts.
According to the radio here Basque countries, the attack on the great carnivorous cetaceans of the dolphins family took place around 2 p.m., two nautical miles from the coast.
A “game” dangerous for boaters
The two people, who appealed a rescue appeal following the animal attack, were taken care of by the Spanish maritime rescue and security company. They were brought back, healthy and saves, to the port of Getaria, a commune located in the autonomous community of the Spanish Basque Country, in the north of the country.
According to the Spanish rescue company Salvamiento Maritimo, orca attacks in this sector are “unusual”. The radio specifies that attacks of this type have already taken place in Galicia, but rarely in this part of the Atlantic coast.
Elsewhere, in the Mediterranean Sea, and for a few years, orca attacks have multiplied, sometimes causing boats in the Strait of Gibraltar. According to scientists, these attacks result more from a game than aggressive behavior.
