Oscar Piastri wins the Belgian Grand Prix

Piastri won the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Belgium in front of Lando Norris, his teammate at McLaren and Rival for the title, Sunday, after heavy rains had delayed the departure.

Piastri exceeded Norris in the first round of the race after the safety car entered the wells in the fourth round, following a delay in the departure of more than an hour.

“I knew that I was going to try to raise (the foot of the accelerator) a little less than Lando and try to make it hold,” said Piastri, noting that he felt that his car was “alive” when he took an additional risk in the turn of red water, in steep climb.

Norris hinted on the radio that he had problems with the battery which provided him with electrical energy. Zak Brown, managing director of McLaren, told Sky Sports that there was “a small battery problem that we have to examine”.

Norris reduced Piastri’s advance towards the end of the race, but the Australian held out with worn tires and Norris could not approach enough to challenge it.

Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari after keeping Max Verstappen de Red Bull behind him throughout the race.

Starting from the 20th place, the Quebecer launches Stroll, on Aston Martin, finished the race at the 14th step. His teammate Fernando Alonso won only two places compared to his position on the starting grid and he finished 17th.

Title for the title

Piastri increased his advance in the Norris championship from nine to 16 points and prevented his British teammate from winning a third Grand Prix in a row.

It is the second consecutive day when Piastri stood up to Norris, after taking second place in front of his teammate during the sprint on Saturday, won by Verstappen.

With the exception of weather conditions, Norris’s overrun by Piastri has proven an almost identical copy of that which Verstappen has succeeded on Piastri, from second place on the starting grid, in the first round of the Sprint event.

Piastri had been disappointed to qualify in second position for the Grand Prix behind Norris.

“It turns out that leaving second to Spa is not so bad after all,” he said.

Piastri won his sixth victory of the season and is the first McLaren driver to win the Belgian Grand Prix since Jenson Button in 2012.

Unlike the last race in Great Britain, which had been exciting and chaotic, there was no significant rain after the start of the race, and the Sunday test was largely a procession after a few early attacks on the still wet track.

Most of the main competitors went to dry tires at the same time and did not have to stop again.

For the first Red Bull Grand Prix since the dismissal of Christian Horner as director of the team, Verstappen failed in an attempt to overtake Leclerc at the start and passed the rest of the race behind the Ferrari driver on the way to his fourth place.

George Russell finished fifth for Mercedes after an early surpassing on Alex Albon. The latter finished sixth for Williams after held up to Lewis Hamilton de Ferrari, who ranked seventh.
