What if your favorite restaurant only serves you a third of your dish? The idea may surprise. Across the Atlantic, it nevertheless corresponds to a new reality, explains «The New York Times».
Almost 10% of Americans are undergoing appetite suppressant treatment based on GLP-1, including the famous Ozempic, initially developed for diabetic people. Restaurateurs from the trendy neighborhoods of New York quickly seized the extent of the phenomenon and decided to serve tiny menus, adapted to people under treatment.
This adaptation would be a question of economic survival: “If the appetite decreases, the portfolio may also tighten,” says a restaurateur in the American daily. He thus expresses the fear of a sector that sees his customers turn away, for fear of succeeding in swallowing anything.
In New York, but not just
“Riquiquis” meals, there is something for everyone. In this famous New York restaurant, customers can order a “Teeny Weeny Mini Meal” for 8 dollars, literally a “tiny little meal”. On the menu: 40 grams of fries and a 56 gram steak which ends in two or three bites. This formula recalls the children’s menus, but aims for an adult clientele.
Through the globe, other capitals also experience these reduced menus: we find them in London, Dubai and even Paris, reports «Liberation». Some restaurateurs compare this adaptation to the developments set up for vegetarians, stressing that industry has always adapted to the needs of its customers.
According to projections of 2024 relayed by the “New York Times”, almost 30% of Americans could use Ozempic by 2030. The reduced menus are therefore not about to disappear, because the customer remains king, even without appetite.
