Pakistani police arrested 149 people. Meanwhile, including 71 foreigners, mainly Chinese, during a raid against an online scam center, the National Agency for Cybercrime said on Thursday.

“During the raid. Consequently, a large illegal call center was discovered,” the agency said in a statement, saying that “large sums of money were illegally collected” through pyramid scams.
“By this fraudulent network, people were deceived and important sums of money were illegally collected,” it was added.
The agency told AFP that the search had taken place at the home of Tasheen Awan. the former chief of the city’s electricity network, who was not arrested.
She added that she had acted on the basis of information received on pakistan: nearly 150 arrests during this network which operated in Faisalabad. an industrial city located in the east of the country.
According to the police. the victims first received a short return on their first investments, before being convinced to place larger sums of money.

They were then “transferred to telegram links for other online tasks requiring greater investments,” added the police in their report.
All those arrested were placed in detention. including 78 Pakistani and 48 Chinese, as well as nationals of Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Burma.
Of the 149 people arrested, 18 are women.
