Panic after the last Windows 11 update: SSDs become illegible, even irrecoverable

The cumulative update KB5063878, integrated in Windows 11 version 24H2, is suspected of provoking critical errors on certain SSDs.

The latest Windows 11 security update, broadcast in early August (KB5063878), sows the trouble. Intended to protect the system from threats like the Lamma data thief, it seems to have triggered a completely different bug. Several users report that their SSDs or hard drives suddenly become invisible to Windows, for no apparent reason.

And sometimes, even after restarting, access to data remains impossible, raising fears of serious corruption. This problematic patch is notably integrated into the new 24H2 version, still in progressive deployment. A new setback for Microsoft, already undermined by several bugs in recent months.

Windows 11 24h2: a security correction that runs in disaster for your discs

Update KB5063878, published in early August as part of the Tuesday patch, was originally to strengthen the safety of new Windows 11 facilities against “Lamma Stealer” malware. Problem: once installed, this update causes mysterious storage breakdowns on certain PCs.

The scenario is as worrying as it is precise: during prolonged entries (beyond 50 GB) on certain NVME SSDs or mechanical hard drives, the system can completely lose control of the storage support. The disk becomes illegible, its inaccessible data, and the system no longer even recognizes its SMART sensors (which monitor the health state of the equipment). The icing on the bug: a restart sometimes makes it possible to react the disc … until the problem is repeated, tirelessly.

The models without DRAM memory based on pHison controllers would be particularly vulnerable, but even some high -end “business” hard drives are not spared. The tests carried out by a Japanese enthusiast, @necoru_cat, reveal that almost a third of the 21 discs tested undergo irremediable crashes (inaccessible even after restart).

The first analyzes point to a possible dysfunction in the cache of the discs or a memory leak on the Windows side – an old problem which nevertheless seemed solved in 2024. Microsoft, for the time being, has not officially recognized the bug. In the meantime, if you are in 24h2… Avoid large file transfers.
