One night in the dark to capture the magic of shooting stars
Glans perpetuates its tradition by turning off its lights to observe the Perseids. Activities are organized to enjoy this natural spectacle.
The city of Gland will turn off its public lighting on the night of August 12 to 13 to allow the population to observe the Perseids, as it announced in a press release published on July 29, 2025. This initiative, set up since 2021, aims to reduce light pollution and facilitate the observation of this rain of shooting stars which reaches its peak during this period.
Initially organized in collaboration with the Perseid Project association, this action is maintained by the municipality despite stopping the association’s activities. The city invites its residents to enjoy the natural spectacle from their home or on the edge of the forest. Shops are also encouraged to participate by turning off their windows during this special night.
Activities offered under the stars
The town organizes two activities in Place en Ruyre: a picnic under the stars and an educational ride on the theme of bats. Those interested can now register on the city’s website and reserve their picnic basket. It is possible to participate in the two animations or only in one of them. In the event of unfavorable weather, activities will be canceled.
During this night without public lighting, security remains a priority. Motorists are called upon to redouble vigilance on the roads. The city recommends that pedestrians and cyclists wear clear clothes and bring pocket lamps to guarantee their visibility when traveling. This measure will allow each and everyone to take advantage of the astronomical phenomenon safely.
