Floods caused by the passage of the Wipha typhoon to the Philippines led to the evacuation of nearly 50,000 people around Manila, the emergency services said on Tuesday. At least two people are missing.

(Keystone-ATS) The schools and administrations of the capital and the surrounding provinces are closed on Tuesday, after a night of heavy rains which made the Marikina river overflow.

More than 23,000 people living along the river were moved during the night and took refuge in schools, municipal halls or covered courses. Twenty-five thousand other people were evacuated from the cities of Quezon City and Calocan, in the Grand Manila.

According to the rescue office of the city of Marikina, “these people generally come from low zones, along the streams”, which throw themselves into the river.

An empty -found car

In Caloocan, an elderly woman and her driver were swept away while trying to cross a bridge, said the assistant supervisor of an emergency operations center. Their car was found on Monday evening with a broken window. “The rescue operation continues, but to date, they have found either,” he said.

The passage of the Wipha typhoon at the end of last week left at least three dead and seven missing in the center and the south of the Philippines, according to the National Council for Disaster Reduction and Risk Management.

Each year, at least 20 storms or typhoons strike the Philippines or are approaching it, the poorest regions of the country are generally the hardest affected.

According to scientists, climate change causes extreme and more intense extreme weather phenomena all over the world.
