Please note, concert lasers and festivals can damage your camera

With summer, festivals and concerts are increasing, but the risks for your smartphone too. Beyond losing your precious in the crowd, it could just as well be toasted by a laser. Yes, it is possible, and we explain to you why and how to guard against it.

Each summer, thousands of spectators flock to festivals and concerts to vibrate to the rhythm of music and capture unforgettable memories. Smartphones in hand, fans immortalize these moments expected all year round. But an invisible danger lurks in the boosted atmosphere of shows: the spectacle lasers, omnipresent in modern staging, which can (literally) grill the sensor of your camera …

Dangerous lasers for the eyes, but not only

Unlike conventional lighting, a laser concentrates all its energy in an extremely fine and powerful beam. This unspoken light can become a real threat to image sensors. The latter, whether smartphones or other sensors, are designed to receive reflected light, not to face a laser in the face.

When a bundle directly strikes the objective, the light is focused by the internal lenses, which can overcome the energy on a single point of the sensor. Result: burnt pixels, white or black lines, or even a complete failure of the module. And in most cases, these damage is unfortunately irreparable.

Vlogging cameras, drones, gopro, digital cameras … No equipment is spared. Even expensive and professional models can be seriously damaged.

To prevent your camera from grilling when you sing your favorite words, here are some simple reflexes to adopt:

  • Never film laser beams directly.
  • Avoid optical or digital zooms that amplify the risk.
  • Favor lateral shooting angles, far from the light source.
  • Be attentive to the warnings of the organizers, which sometimes report this danger upstream.
