Poisoning in Aisne: the mayor hopes for the first results “today”, the family of a victim wants to file a complaint

The investigation is progressing. Since the appearance of the first cases of poisoning linked to the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the agglomeration of Saint-Quentin (ease), on June 12, which notably caused the death of a teenager, the investigations to find the origin of the contamination continue. First results could be noted “today”, announced this Friday mayor (LR) Frédérique Macarez on Friday on RTL.

Suspecting a food infection linked to meat, the authorities closed preventively last week four halal butcher shops and two butcher’s supermarket rays of the agglomeration, including that of Gauchy. They took samples from each of these places. “We hope to have the results today for the first, perhaps others in the weekend and the following days,” said Frédérique Macarez.

According to the first analyzes on the victims, “all point on meat”, reiterated the councilor, insisting that “there is no affected community”, including in canteens or nursing homes. “These are rather purchases made at home,” she said, in this case in the butcheries concerned, therefore closed “in principle of precaution”.

“The rapprochement of the samples between those of butcher’s meat and those on children will allow it to be said to be 100 %. The research was done and on the last situations, it seems to confirm it, “she said.

The authorities on alert “a few days”

To date, 25 people have been contaminated: 24 children and an elderly person. A teenager, Élise, died on June 16. On Friday, “fourteen children left the hospital and were able to reach their homes. Ten children remain hospitalized ”, according to the mayor of Saint-Quentin. The last two cases were recorded on Thursday, the Aisne prefecture announced.

New cases are not excluded, insisted Frédérique Macarez, because the incubation period is ten days. Even if there have been “encouraging signals” in recent days, the authorities remain “on alert for a few more days,” she said.

On June 21, the Saint-Quentin prosecution had opened a preliminary investigation by manslaughter, involuntary injuries, endangering and deception aggravated by the endangerment of human health. On Wednesday, he divel in favor of the public health center of the Paris prosecutor’s office. A “very specialized” pole, points to Frédérique Macarez, for whom it is “the natural consequence of the typology of the case on which we are”. The councilor hopes “that he can express himself today on first elements”.

Sick “two or three weeks later”

This case has moved the entire agglomeration of Saint-Quentin. The parents of one of the contaminated children announced on BFMTV their intention to file a complaint. “If we don’t do anything, we’re going to go home tomorrow and it will be a forgotten story …” said Tony, Dinozo’s father, nine months. The toddler was hospitalized for several days, before being able to come out, out of danger.

His father explained that he bought meat in one of the six butchers affected by the preventive closures. Her son was sick “two or three weeks later” consuming a dish.

Meat from pre-eventively closed shops was served during several events between June 20 and 22: a football tournament in Saint-Quentin (Oise), a mini-basketball festival in Gauchy (Aisne) and a Kermesse des Écoles à Steves-et-Bocquiaux (Aisne). “No case of severe food poisoning among the participants of these events was noted at this time,” said the prefecture.
