The president of Cameroon, Paul Biya, announced that he was a candidate for his own succession this Sunday, July 13. The 92 -year -old head of state has been in office since 1982.

Paul Biya, president of Cameroon aged 92, was a candidate for his succession this Sunday, July 13, through a press release published on X.

“I am a candidate for the presidential election of October 12, 2025,” he wrote. The outgoing president could honor an eighth term in the event of an election.

“Be assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the acuity of the challenges we face,” continued the head of state in power since 1982.

Voices rise against Biya

Voices had been raised in recent weeks in Cameroon to ask the president of this Central African country to hand over, while others had reaffirmed their support for the Head of State.

Camp Biya recently experienced several defections with the presidential declaration of candidacy of Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Bello Bouba Maïgari, both members of the government and longtime supporters of Paul Biya.

Maurice Kamto, more fierce opposing to the Head of State, who arrived second during the presidential election in 2018 and Cabral Libii, an important figure in the opposition, are also in the race for the presidential election.
