Prévot warns Bouchez on Gaza: “The attitude of a single person cannot compromise the reputation of the whole country”

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot (committed) does not exclude blocking government initiatives if the MR and the N-VA continue to prevent it from adopting a firmer position towards Israel and recognizing the Palestinian state.

“If there is no firmer in the government concerning human rights violations committed by the Israeli government, or if no measure is taken in favor of the recognition of Palestine, a major crisis is looming,” he again insisted this Monday in an interview with the Flemish newspaper in Standaard, after having already said it in the RTL Info on August 14.

The committed, the CD&V and the Vooruit, members of the Arizona Federal Coalition, oppose these two points at the N-VA and especially to the MR. “For me and my party, Gaza is indeed a crucial question,” insists Maxime Prévot. “We absolutely have to find a solution within the government,” he urges. “The attitude of a single person cannot compromise the reputation of the whole country,” he said about the president of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez.

Prime Minister Bart de Wever and his vice-prime ministers will meet this Wednesday for a “Kern” meeting, the restricted council of ministers. Maxime Prévot will provide a note containing “concrete proposals”. In addition to the recognition of Palestine, they include a ban on traveling for Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, the prohibition of products from occupied territories, as well as the prohibition of overview and transit of arms to Israel.

“I cannot imagine that Belgium joins the small club of countries which do not recognize Palestine,” says the chief of diplomacy. “If we miss the mark, the international image of Belgium will suffer. »»
