Photovoltaics in Belgium saw its production considerably increase in May.
Belgian photovoltaic panels have produced 36.7% more electricity than in 2024 at the same periodreports the Echo, citing the figures of the manager of the electricity transport network (GRT), Elia.
Over the first six months of the year, the production of Belgian photovoltaic panels flew by 36.7% compared to the same period in 2024. IIt is the biggest annual increase since 2013. In ten years, Solar electricity production has tripled in the country.
“We have reached production records with 1,370 GWh produced in June and 1,318 GWh produced in May respectively,” confirms Jean Fassiaux, spokesperson for Elia. In June, photovoltaics represented nearly a quarter of the country’s total electricity production.
But the peaks of solar production are accompanied new phenomena to manage for GRTs. During moments when production is particularly high and lower consumption, they must be particularly attentive to any problems related to the overproduction of solar panels (incompressibility, in jargon).
In the immediate future, the GRT insists mainly on the need to develop the flexibility of the network. “Produce less when you have little consumption and consume more when you have a lot of production. This is already possible, but it is necessary to accelerate its development by raising the barriers and especially by enhance this flexibility ”, insists Jean Fassiaux.
