France places 27 universities in the 2025 edition of the Shanghai general classification unveiled on Friday August 15. It arrives in 11th place worldwide depending on the number of establishments. A thousand universities are classified in total. France went from 18 establishments classified in 2003 to 27 today. However, indicators remain worrying.
Decline in 13th place in the world in number of scientific publications

France fell from 6th to 13th place in the world in number of scientific publications, according to the Observatoire des sciences et techniques in December 2024. However, the program “Choose France for Science”Has received a substantial funding envelope, namely 100 million euros from the State in addition to 500 million euros on a European scale. Its objective is to strengthen the attraction of French research for international scientists.
France sees an increase in two establishments in the ranking in comparison with 2024. The best classified establishment, the Paris-Saclay University is positioned at the top of French universities. It is 13th on the world podium and 3rd in Europe. Four French institutions are among the 100 best universities worldwide, they are Paris-Saclay University, PSL, Sorbonne University and Paris Cité University. There are eight French establishments among the Top 200, with the University of Strasbourg, Aix-Marseille University, the Grenoble-Alpes University and the University of Montpellier.
Two entries in the ranking
We note the entry into this ranking of the Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University and the University of Picardy Jules-Verne Amiens. These results illustrate the scientific work carried out and a community of researchers recognized in their respective fields.
The Shanghai ranking has been carried out since 2003 by the Chinese University Jiao Tong, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Its purpose is to assess the commitment of higher education establishments in their research activities. This ranking identifies the 1,000 best world universities according to 6 weighted criteria.
A classification centered on the quality of teachers’ publications
These criteria are the number of alumni Nobel Price and Fields medals (10 %of the overall note), the number of teacher-researchers Nobel Price and Fields medals (20 %), the number of highly cited researchers (20 %), the number of articles published in Nature and Science (20 %), the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20 %) Academic of teachers, taking up the 5 previous indicators divided by the number of permanent teacher-researchers (1 0%).
