Racism, hostile Switzerland?
In care as elsewhere, racial discrimination is increasing in Switzerland. The figures are eloquent.
Let us first take care. In one year, reports related to racial discrimination almost doubled. The same day, a septuagenarian appears in Valais For having mentioned his “allergy” in the face of mixed staff while in Geneva, two nurses from the HUG denounce cases of harassment linked to their origin and their sexual orientation.
Then dissect legal statistics. In 2024, in health and elsewhere, there were precisely 528 infractions to the criminal standard against discrimination and incentive to hatred. It is 54% more than in 2021. A vertiginous progression that the most optimistic will lend to a release of speech, to a visibility of victims. It may be true. But above all naive.
Do not welcome the courage of the 528 victims. It’s theirs. Rather asking ourselves about the hostility of our country. On the number of people who, on a daily basis, are made guilty of their origin. To these women, to these men, who were moving in silence, far from the courts and the public square.
As we know, racism is a problem. But asserting it, even aloud, is not enough. You have to act. Awareness, protect and support. Now more than ever. We owe it to the 528 people who dared to speak.
