Record increase in the temperature of the Swiss lakes for the past fifteen days – RTS.CH

Swiss waters have grown greatly because of the hot weather. For two weeks, the lake temperature has won five degrees on average. What to constitute an absolute record according to the Meteonews weather service.

If we refer to the standard established thanks to the average obtained from 1983 to 2024, the increase represents between 4 and 7 degrees. An increase that Meteonews explains almost only by the scorching episode that has touched the country for almost two weeks.

In French-speaking Switzerland, Lake Geneva sees the temperature of its water climbing 26 degrees, 4 more compared to mid-June and an additional five compared to the average of the last 41 years.

Neuchâtel lake follows the same trend with a little cooler water (25), but also an increase of five degrees both compared to the second part of June and all of the previous 41 years.

The palm returns to Lake Bienne with a temperature of 26 degrees which corresponds to an increase of 6 degrees compared to the past month and its average of the last 41 years.

Lugano, the hottest

The highest temperature raised by Meteonews is that of Lac de Lugano with 28 degrees, which corresponds to an increase of 5 degrees over the average of the last 41 years.

Lake Walen, located in the cantons of Saint-Gall and Glaris, sees its temperature climbing 25 degrees, 7 more than its average ranging from 1983 to 2024.

Meteonews warns, however, that the situation is extremely variable and that the disturbed weather announced this weekend and for the beginning of next week could drop these values.

Rivers also concerned

The rivers also presented significant temperature differences compared to the standard. The AAR near Bern, the Reuss near Lucerne or the Rhine near Laufenburg have never been so hot.

In addition to the hot weather, there are other reasons that explain high temperatures according to Meteonews. The meteorological service quotes the low snowy cover in the mountains at the start of the hot season.

Affected fauna and flora

The impact of this rapid warming of the country’s waters is visible on several levels, indicate meteorologists. In addition to the fairly low water level, some species of fish have difficulty in too hot water.

Algae growth is also favored in this context, which leads to a reduction in the oxygen content of water. Consequences, a blockage of the photosynthetic processes of aquatic plants, as well as the formation of toxic substances such as blue algae.
