If certain standards must be met in order to keep the exterior architecture of old houses, this is not the case with regard to the interior.
Luckily, owners are sensitive to it and designers wish to revalue this heritage while combining it harmoniously with the contemporary.

It is in this state of mind that Sophie Dufresne and Mathieu Gignac wanted to renovate their house by calling on the workshop between four walls, which had helped them a few years earlier to optimize their property from Île-des-Sœurs after the birth of the twins Mia and Louis, 13 years ago.
Purchased in 2022, this Westmountain home dating from the beginning of the XXe century was a big crush on Sophie, seduced from her first visit by her brightness.
“I immediately felt good, even if pieces were too large and disproportionate following decompartmentalization,” she explains. I then contacted between four walls to rebalance the spaces and modernize the kitchen while keeping the house stamp. »»

The sliding doors in the walls were restored.

Dazzling white
The objective was to preserve the character of the place in its entirety while improving the layout of the ground floor.
Certain repairs had been poorly made, especially in terms of doors, which degraded historical aesthetics. So we reworked them, then we raised the woodwork.
Gatline Artis, interior designer and owner of between four walls
This is evidenced by the living room, located on the left of the entrance, which was completely repainted in white to enhance the texture of the moldings and the rosette. In fact, apart from the adjoining reading corner – with the muffled blue navy blue atmosphere – all the common areas are now immaculate in order to accentuate the brightness and ensure a fresh and timeless atmosphere in the decor.

Unlike the rest of the common spaces where white dominates, the reading corner is painted in navy blue to create a cocoon effect (Authentik lighting light).
The kitchen is located on the other side of the vestibule. Originally, it was stored at the bottom of the area where the office is now organized. All the rest of the room was sadly empty.

The kitchen and dining room segments are separated, but the arcades let the light enter and help to soften the space.
We have recovered by creating a large central volume that separates the kitchen in two. Everyday elements are hidden at the back, while the open part promotes conviviality.

A bar area and a lounge equipped with a curved sofa complete this surface, now inhabited by four distinct, connected and inviting areas. The whole is much more balanced, welcoming, functional, ventilated and well organized.

Three suspensions (TOSB) punctuate the dining room and their design echoes the round shapes of the property.

Elegance of the curves
In order to ensure chic and softness in this interior, the designers have integrated different rounded elements. This is the case of one of the corners of the satin quartz island, which fluidifies traffic.
In the background, the dining room is partially revealed behind symmetrical openings; Initially, there were two straight breakthroughs. Modified as an ark, they add presence to the place and recall the old style. This room, flooded with light, is fitted out in an enlargement built in the 1970s and furnished with a large table crowned with luminaires whose design echoes the omnipresent round shapes in the property.

The staircase leading to the upper floor is one of the preserved treasures. It provides an undeniable charm at the residence, as well as the original stained glass. The white backdrop is enough to enhance these old elements.

Redesigned rooms
Before the intervention of between four walls, only the bed was a little lost in the huge master bedroom.
We separated the room in half, because we do not need a monumental space for the sleep part and the storage was minimal. By partitioning, we created a dressing room in addition to restoring the proportions.

Also, the space is much less cold, but very bright. Even the fireplace was repainted in white, because its tile was very damaged.

In Mia’s room decorated with arch details, the designers created an integrated closet because she had no storage. She neighbors that of her brother, who benefits from two distinct areas. “Louis is a great lover of hunting and fishing. The designers have reversed the room and office spaces, ”informs the owner.

The latter, painted in a dark shade, serves as a transient room where to work and invite friends, while the rest corner is the bottom, as in a alcove where the original paneling ceiling warms the atmosphere. Interesting point in the transitional zone: the curtains can disappear in the extension of the window to leave the entire open glass surface. This constant concern for detail contributes to the cohesion of this project updated without distorting the essence of the place.
