The agreement between Russia and the UN on foodstuffs and fertilizers will end
The agreement between Russia and the United Nations aimed at facilitating exports of food and Russian fertilizers to international markets will end on July 22, UN said on Friday.
“The final meeting on the memorandum of agreement between the United Nations and the Russian Federation has taken place today [vendredi] in Geneva “announced in a press release the UN Commerce and Development, which piloted the agreement at the request of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The agreement had been signed on July 22, 2022 for three years, and “It will not be renewed” Due to disagreements, a source close to discussions told the France-Presse. It aimed to facilitate exports of food and Russian fertilizers to international markets, in particular to reduce world prices.
The economic sanctions that strike Russia, since its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, save fertilizers and cereals, but the fear of finding itself on the wrong side of the law had paralyzed the carriers and explodes the insurance premiums.
After intense discussions, Russia and the UN had established a framework in matters in particular of insurance and financial transactions which was compatible with the three sanctions systems in force (United States, United Kingdom and European Union). Moscow has complained several times that the agreement has remained more or less dead letter.
On July 22, 2022, Russia and Ukraine also signed an agreement, under the aegis of the United Nations and Turkey, relating to the export of Ukrainian cereals. Moscow refused to extend it in July 2023, denouncing the obstacles to the trade in Russian agricultural products.
