The association Les Ailes de Gaby was born in 2018. Its missions are to contribute to the progress of research on pediatric cancers and to improve the comfort of hospitalized children as well as that of their parents. Hakima Prélat, president of the association, received us to discuss it.
Hakima, for what reason (s) have you created the association Les Ailes de Gaby?
I decided to create the association following the death of my son, Gabriel. He had a brain tumor, he died in 2015 at the age of 8. During its care, I noticed that hospitals lacked resources. I then made the decision to create an association to help research on pediatric cancers, especially on brain tumors, and also to provide help in order to improve the reception of hospitalized children and their parents. I was supported in my project by family and friends and I started. Today we are ten volunteers and around thirty members.
What actions have you implemented to date thanks to the donations collected?
We have created a sensory space at the Sens hospital. We started with a sensory cart that the Rotary Club de Sens has partially funded with us. These are columns of bubbles, water mattresses and carpets. The child focuses on sounds and colors while care is given. Since then, nurses have created a whole sensory space in a room, games have been added to the cart. We are thinking about developing a room for parents.
Each year, we donate donations to the Gustave Roussy Institute, last year we were able to donate 8,000 euros. Gustave Roussy is launching a campaign each year in September, September in gold, which allows funds to be collected and helping research. Moreover, we will be present this year for September in Gold organized in Sens by the Territorial Professional Community of Health (CPTS).
What events do you organize to allow people who wish to support you?
We have been organizing each year since the death of Gabriel, the football tournament called the Gabriel Prélat challenge. He is organized by his former club, the football club of the Gâtinais in Burgundy (FCGB). On this occasion, we animated a raffle and we make a release of biodegradable balloons. We are also sometimes associated with events that help us raise funds. We are also present in the Christmas markets of Chéroy and Montacher-Villegardin. In September, we organize our annual meal open to everyone. It will take place on September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Valériana Tour in Saint-Valérien. Jimmy, the association’s godfather, will make a concert during the aperitif and DJ Sinatra will host the rest of the evening. All the benefits of the evening will go to the association. They will be used to set up a new project in 2026.
