According to the Federal Medicines Agency (AFMPS), nine cases of pregnancy have been reported in women who used the Ozempic. The Minister of Public Health, Frank Vandenbroucke, told the House that “Four to five of these pregnancies were not planned”.
Europe is currently investigating the possible link between the use of weight loss treatments such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, and an increase in unwanted pregnancies, as our colleagues in the evening relay.
Weight loss and return of fertility
Nicolas Paquot, head of service at the CHU de Liège, interviewed by our colleagues, sees an explanation in the hormonal changes induced by weight loss. “Obesity or overweight are frequent causes of infertility. When a woman weight loss a lot, this can reactivate her fertility, especially if she hadn’t been using contraception for a while ”he explains.
This phenomenon could surprise patients who thought they could no longer get pregnant. Another worrying element: the possible decrease in the effectiveness of the pill. The British Medicines Authority (MHRA) has recently mentioned forty cases where contraception would have failed in women taking these drugs.
The reasons mentioned? These treatments slow down digestion, which can disrupt the absorption of the pill. In addition, side effects such as diarrhea or vomiting can also compromise its effectiveness. The European Medicines Agency conducts an in -depth investigation. In the meantime, AFMPS recommends that women concerned to use an additional contraceptive method.
