South of Spain: Tarifa fire “stabilized”, return of evacuated vacationers

The fire that led to the evacuation of more than 1,500 people at Tarifa, southern Spain on Tuesday, is now stabilized. No victim is to be deplored, and vacationers can return to the area, the Andalusian authorities said. The fire had started near a campsite due to the strong wind, in a context of heat wave and extreme risk of fires across the country.

The fire that broke out on Tuesday in the forest of the Tarifa seaside resort in the far south of Spain, causing the evacuation of thousands of tourists is “stabilized”, and the holidaymakers who had to leave, the authorities announced on Wednesday evening. The fire is now “stabilized”, is delighted on the social network X Antonio Sanz, in charge of security within the Andalusian regional government, indicating that the “return of all the evacuated people (was) authorized”.

The fire, which broke out on Tuesday afternoon, did not make any victims but forced to evacuate 1,550 people from campsites, hotels and housing, as well as thousands of vehicles, most of them belonging to bathers who came to enjoy the beaches in the region. According to the TVE public television, the fire started in a motorhome of a Mount La Peña campsite, near a beach, and quickly spread because of the strong wind, very common in this region of Andalusia and the Strait of Gibraltar, popular with surf lovers.

The fire did not affect the city center of Tarifa, a city of approximately 19,000 inhabitants in the province of Cadiz, whose population is growing in summer due to tourists, and which is located west of the place where the flames started, because the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.

Spain is experiencing an intense heat wave this week, with temperatures bordering on 40ºC in many places and with a “very high and extreme risk of forest fires in a large part of the country”, warned civil protection on Wednesday.
