A person died while trying to put out a forest fire in the Castille-et-Léon region located in the northwest of Spain. She thus became the third victim of fires this summer in the country, the authorities announced on Thursday.

(Keystone-ATS) “Today, we are deploying a new death of a person who is part of the fire-fighting system in the province of León, more precisely in the Valdería region,” wrote on the social network X the prefect of Castille-et-León, Nicanor Sen Vélez.

The Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed this death on national public television, presenting his condolences “to the family, to colleagues and to the whole society”.

The minister, who asked for the European Union help on Wednesday evening and the sending of two Canadair, said that in total, there were eleven level 2 fires (on a scale that has four) and that the latter “concern” the authorities, “especially in Zamora” in Castile-et-Léon, where “a large area has burned”.

France will send two Canadair to Spain and a coordination plane in Spain, in response to this call for help launched by Madrid. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau clarified that planes would take off in the morning of the Civil Security base in Nîmes, in the south of France, for a planned mission “to last two days”.

Level 2 fire alert means a high risk of fire and implies a deployment of additional personnel, including the army and fire -fighting equipment.

Injured in serious condition

This is the third death in fires in a few days after the announcement Tuesday morning of the death of a man, after his serious burns throughout the body, in a forest fire in Tres cantos “, a town 25 kilometers from the center of Madrid.

Tuesday evening, a 35 -year -old volunteer would die by fighting against a fire in the León region. Other people were injured in this fire and are in serious condition due to burns.

This series of fires coincides with the heat wave that entered its twelfth day Thursday with all the regions on alert, including those in the North. Maximum temperatures are 40 ° C and night temperatures do not descend below 25 ° C.
