Statistics Canada notes a modest decrease in crime in Canada in 2024

For the first time in three years, crime is down to the country, according to a new statistics report Canada.

The decrease in car flights (particularly in Quebec), break -in introductions, juvenile pornography affairs and misdeeds is largely responsible for this drop.

However, the painting remains dark when you look more closely. The feminicides are in sharp progression, crime has grown slightly in Quebec in 2024 and the number of crimes is generally much higher than 10 years ago, despite the slight decline observed last year.

Speaking of vehicle flights

After three years of spectacular flambé following the pandemic, the scourge of vehicle flights begins to show signs of breathlessness. In 2024, there were 239 cases of vehicle flights per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease of 17% compared to the previous year. The most pronounced decline was found in Quebec, with a reduction of 27%. The federal government held a national summit in February of last year to tackle the problem. Ottawa revealed shortly after an action plan that involved the collaboration of almost all the country’s police and the various port and border authorities.

Explosion of display flights

A sign that the cost of living has been hit hard since the start of the pandemic, Statistics Canada noted in 2024 an increase in display flights (in stores) for a fourth consecutive year. Throughout the country, 182,361 display cases of $ 5,000 or less were reported. The frequency of these crimes jumped 66% between 2014 and 2024. The Federal Agency notes, however, that other types of flights and break -in entries continued their downward trend. The number of skilled flights, that is to say theft involving an act of violence, remained stable.

Leap of feminicides

There were 788 homicides in Canada last year, a modest reduction of eight compared to 2023. But as Statistical Canada points out, these figures hide a notable dynamic: the number of women killed increased by 28 while the number of men killed fell by 34. In addition, the Federal Agency observed “an important increase in the proportion of women killed in the hands of their spouse”: 32% to 42% between 2023 and 2024 on all feminicides. In other words, more than 40% of women killed in Canada were victims of their intimate partner, compared to 6% in men.

Increasingly numerous hate crimes

The number of hate crimes does not fade. In 2024, this type of crime increased by 1% in Canada, with 4,882 cases declared to the police. To put things in perspective, this modest appearance increases the sixth annual increase in a row, which includes a significant leap of 23% in 2023. Since 2018, their number has “more than doubled” (169% more). These figures are explained by a notable increase in acts linked to race or ethnicity and contrast with a remarkable drop of 26% of hate crimes linked to sexual orientation.

Montreal down, Quebec up

Ontario and Quebec are distinguished in terms of crime, being the two most peaceful provinces, according to “the gravity index of crime”, which takes into account the number of crimes committed to the country and their gravity. If global crime has climbed slightly throughout Quebec, it fell in its metropolis, Montreal. Conversely, the cities of Quebec, Saguenay and Sherbrooke suffered the most marked increases.
