Stellantis recalls more than 200,000 vehicles in France equipped with three-cylinder petrol which succeeds 1.2 PureTech

By adopting no less than 70 % of new parts, including a chain instead of the controversial submerged distribution belt, the third generation of three-cylinders 1.2 Turbo-Essance of the Stellantis group seems to have given the means to correct the reliability problems of its predecessors. To mark the occasion, she even abandoned the name Puretech, which has become cursed. But that does not protect it from reminders since 238,000 Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Peugeot or Opel vehicles are convened in France.

Appeared about two years ago, the third generation of three-cylinders 1.2 Turbo-Essance from the Stellantis group is still young. For the time being, it is therefore difficult to draw up a real assessment concerning its ability to collect big mileage without flinching. Especially since its deployment was made in a fairly gradual way. On our reliability form, we have therefore received any testimony from a reader who has encountered problems with this mechanics. The reproaches focused more on the fairly special automatic transmission which accompanies it on the hybrid versions of the Euro-American company.

A first reminder for the replacement for 1.2 Puretech

On paper, it is true that Stellantis seems to have taken the necessary measures to finally turn the page of 1.2 Puretech, a name now banished from its communication. Despite a familiar displacement and architecture, it was a completely redesigned engine that has been launched. It has no less than 70 % of new parts, including a distribution chain instead of the old belt submerged in the oil which tended to degrade prematurely. However, this does not completely shelter it from other types of problems. One of them even requires Stellantis today to bring in the workshop 237,992 vehicles in France equipped with this three-cylinder of the latest generation.

Yet another reminder for risk of fire

This large -scale campaign aims above all to avoid a risk of fire, one of the main causes of recall in Europe at all car manufacturers and not only for electric cars. Here, it is an insufficient tightening torque of certain nuts that could come to generate a fuel leak at the high pressure pipe between the high pressure pump and the injection ramp. In addition to an overconsumption of petrol, a fire start is not excluded in the most serious cases. But according to the Stellantis Communication Service, the probability of arriving at this end remains very limited.

However, do not hesitate to stop to call a garage if you smell a fuel smell, if your car consumes unusually or if a light indicator lights up on the dashboard. The planned intervention is completely free and lasts less than half an hour. It consists in tightening the nuts connections on the high pressure pipe as well as the injection ramp screws. There will therefore be no problem of availability of parts, as some owners of Citroën, DS or Opel still know in the endless Takata affair.

Eight brands and more than 20 models concerned

Peugeot is the most strongly affected brand by this recall with nearly 150,000 vehicles, including 3008 of the current generation or the previous one.

The vehicles concerned here are also much more recent than for the defective airbag scandal. They were made between 2023 and 2025. They can be petrol or hybrid and develop from 100 to 145 hp depending on the version as well as the calculation methodology used. For some time now, light hybridization variants have indeed seen their power increase without technical evolution to adapt to a future change in approval standards. In total, in France, this recall affects eight brands in very varied proportions:

  • 149 157 Peugeot
  • 54 803 Citroën
  • 15 263 Opel
  • 7 184 Fiat
  • 5 932 DS
  • 3 167 Jeep
  • 2 108 Alfa Romeo
  • 378 Lancia

Many of these manufacturers have an online tool to find out if his car should return to the workshop thanks to his serial number. But it is possible that this new campaign does not appear right away because not all the vehicles will be summoned at the same time to avoid overcoming the workshops too much. In any case, you should also be notified by registered mail. The smartphone application of each brand can also warn you. There is therefore almost no chance of being forgotten, especially that we are talking about fairly recent cars here, normally well known to official networks. On the other hand, do not necessarily be too in a hurry because this recall will further accentuate the workload of garages often already saturated. More than 20 models must indeed be corrected, which also shows how this new 1.2 Turbo has already had time to spread in the Stellantis group.
