Around 2:30 p.m. this Sunday, the supervisors of the Strasbourg remand center in the Elsau district intervened in the cell of an inmate, taken in a fire. Three agents from the remand center equipped with Ari (respiratory system) and a RIA (armed fire tap) extracted the prisoner, unconscious, in order to provide him with first aid. The firefighters were also called. The man, whose age is not communicated, could not be resuscitated. He died in the remand center.
Four other cells were evacuated due to the smoke, but the prisoners concerned returned to their place of detention a little later, after having been examined by the emergency services, as are the personal staff. There was no injuries or hospitalization.
An open investigation
The Strasbourg prosecutor’s office, the judicial police officer and the SAMU were immediately informed. The establishment, which describes a “shock”, indicates that an investigation has been opened to clarify the origins of the disaster for the moment unknown, intentional or accidental. In 2024, an entire floor of the Strasbourg remand center had been evacuated due to a release of smoke.
