Switzerland cannot go a horseman alone in terms of air transport. Our addpote several regulations concern aviation and air security, air traffic management and environmental protection.
Equality of conditions for climatic measures
The revised CO2 law entered into force on 1is January 2025. It also includes measures to reduce aviation greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are at the heart of this approach.
The Swiss Parliament has decided to create fair competition conditions for airlines, aviation fuel suppliers and airports in Switzerland, like those that exist in the EU. This is why Switzerland now adopts the refueleu regulations for aviation. This regulation provides for harmonized rules for the supply and use of SAF in the EU.
Only Geneva and Zurich are affected
Refueleu Aviation requires aviation fuel suppliers that they supply the fuel market containing a minimum proportion of SAF. In addition to the obligation to mix, the regulations impose refueling requirements on aircraft operators.
Airports must facilitate access to SAF in order to promote its use. The CO2 regulation governs the scope of this mixing obligation; In Switzerland, only national airports in Zurich and Geneva are concerned. These provisions have been applicable in Switzerland since 1is January 2026.
Another EU regulation provides for the voluntary publication of programs on flight offers. Switzerland will introduce this information from January 1, 2026, in accordance with the CO2 law.
In terms of air security, a regulation extends the scope of the regulations relating to shock resistant fuel systems for helicopters. In addition, provisions relating to the obligation to provide information on fire protection in the hold of planes and helicopters are integrated into the agreement. The objective: to reduce the risk of fatal accidents and increase the safety of the exploitation of aircraft carrying dangerous goods.
In order to increase air security, another regulation provides for adjustments to freight and mail aerial, as well as the certification of airport security personnel. (OF)
