During the 20th century, the care environment, like the whole of our Western society, took the turn of the plastic. The autoclaves filled with glass syringes or rubber tubes were replaced by boxes of disposable equipment – masks, compresses or even infusion pockets – delivered each week and quickly rebuilt, direction the incinerator.
For example, the activities of the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) generated 5,200 tonnes of waste in 2024. “2,365 tonnes was waste intended for incineration and 1979 tonnes of waste to recycle,” said the institution, which managed to reduce its amount of plastic waste compared to 2022, by removing synthetic covers. The waste to recycling is mainly paper, cardboard and food remains.
