Find out what the most efficient four -season tires are
Different tire models have been examined by the TCS. Results: there are great disparities in braking and hope -for -mileage.
One of the advantages of tires all seasons is financial, since they avoid changing gums during the year (unless we wear).
IMAGO
- The TCS has tested 16 tire models in all highly used seasons.
- Goodyear, Continental, Pirelli and Bridgestone obtain the best global assessments.
- The braking distances vary up to 11 meters depending on the model and the type of road.
The main advantage of the main advantage of the main advantage of being versatile and ensuring good outfit on the road both in spring/summer and in autumn/winter. The interest of these gums is not only technical, it is also financial: the motorist does not have to change tires during the year (out of wear, of course), he saves on the purchase of two games of these gums and on mounting costs.
But which tires four season to choose? THE Touring Club Suisse (TCS) has just published the conclusions of his tests for this Type of car tire. The association evaluated 16 models, in 225/45 R17 dimension, commonly mounted on compact and medium vehicles. For each of them, 19 criteria have been examined on driving safety (handling, braking and stability on different types of roads) and environmental impact (bearing noise, consumption, wear and abrasion, in particular).
Four brands in mind
“We are testing the tires in summer in Rome, Italy, performance on wet ground in Hanover, Germany, and those on snow in Ivalo, Finland, on a closed test field,” explains Jordan Girod, spokesperson for the TCS, which we interviewed. “Our tire test is the most intensive and most renowned in all of Europe, and it is highly appreciated by motorists,” he said.
So much for the methodology. What about results? The four-season tires having received the best global note (all criteria combined) by the TCS are the Vector 4Sesons Gen-3 of the Goodyear brand, the Allseasoncontact2 of Continental, the Cinuturato All Season SF3 of Pirelli and the Turanza All Season 6 of Bridgestone. All get 4 out of 5 stars, “highly recommended”.
Regarding more precisely braking distances, an important criterion, they vary greatly depending on the models tested. It is on wet roads that the differences between the highest rated tires and those mostly rated are the most marked. Continental Allseasoncontact 2 gums allow a vehicle to stop in 31.3 meters, against 42.6 meters for the ARIVO Carlorficial A/S. Or a difference of just over 11 meters.
On a dry road, the difference in braking distance is reduced to about 7 meters between the most effective tires, the CINTURATO ALL SEASON SF 3 of Pirelli (38 m), and the least effective, the quartaris 5 of Barum (45.3 m).
On snow -capped roads, the difference is no longer “only” of 3.5 meters between the best tires, the N’Blue 4Season 2 of Nexen, the quartaris 5 of Barum and the Crossclimate 2 of Michelin (all three ex aequo with 9 m), and the worst, the Multi PT565 Petlas (12.5 m).
Another important criterion, that of forecast mileage, in other words the hope of lifespan before wear. On this point, the palm goes to the 4Seasons Gen-3 Vector tires in Goodyear, with nearly 68,000 km, far ahead of the EcoBlue2 4S of Superia and their less than 35,000 km.
Overall, Jordan Girod recognizes that “the progress made in the development of all seasons is enormous. Our tests, compared to the results of ten years ago, clearly demonstrate this. Current products are approaching the performance of summer and winter tires. ”
The Swiss rather seasonal tires
Finally, in terms of prices, are the best tires all seasons tested by the TCS also the most expensive? Jordan Girod replies that the association does not carry out any analysis on this aspect, “due to the major price differences between the different regions of Switzerland and the constant evolution of prices on the market”. However, the spokesman admits that “the most expensive tires are generally more efficient, but it is not a systematic rule”.
Jordan Girod adds that if the tires all seasons are sold very well in Germany and the Netherlands, the situation is different in Switzerland, “due to the topography”. “The Swiss continue to opt mainly for seasonal tires, that is to say summer and winter tires,” he concludes.
