Since its creation in 2000 by the UIP, the World Conference of Presidents of Parliament has brought together the highest representatives of parliaments and the United Nations every five years. Previous conferences have contributed significantly to strengthening the parliamentary dimension of global governance and filling the democratic deficit in international affairs.
The conference will be preceded, on July 28, by the 15th Summit of Presidents of Parliament, organized in collaboration with the Swiss Parliament.
This summit, which will be held at the headquarters of the International Labor Organization (ILO), aims to bring together women occupying the highest decision -making functions within the parliaments in order to define the parliamentary program according to political, economic, environmental and social developments which require unified and sensitive global governance solutions.
Founded in 1889 to encourage cooperation and dialogue between all nations, as the first multilateral political organization, the UIP now has 181 member parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary organizations.
It works for peace, democracy and sustainable development, and helps parliaments to strengthen, rejuvenate itself, be more ecological, get closer to gender parity and become more innovative institutions.
