The accordion appeals to a new generation of young passionate musicians – RTS.CH

In Valais, for a week, accordion fans met to share their passion. More than forty musicians and musicians from all over Switzerland, and surprise, they are between 6 years old and 25 years old. A new breath for this instrument with the sometimes old -fashioned image.

Gaspard is a virtuoso of the accordion. He has been playing it for 5 years. At 12, he has already won two Swiss prizes with his instrument. “It’s super diversified. Tango, classical music, jazz, then the musette,” he explains in the 19:30 of August 8.

This summer, Gaspard found in Valais around forty other accordion enthusiasts for a week of camp punctuated by music, game and pleasure, supervised by qualified teachers. Together, they learn, perfection and discover new songs to play on their instrument.

A new breath

The accordion is a captivating instrument, but also very demanding. And even if it sometimes seems the inheritance of another time, it allows you to play pieces often far from traditional folklore. In Valais, during this week between enthusiasts, the repertoire passes from Beach Boys to Magic System, without forgetting the traditional tango or the musette.

“There is more and more enthusiasm that is created. We also see it in relation to the repertoire that changes. The accordion has a very folk past, but now we can go into other styles, universes, and then also in orchestra music”, specifies Jérôme Courbat, director of the camp and winner of the prize for the best accordionist in Switzerland during the national discipline championship in 2017.

Proof that the craze for the accordion does not run out of steam, the dates for the next children’s and adolescent camps have already been announced. The enthusiasts thus have an appointment in April 2026 for a musical and friendly week.
