Discovered in 2024 by the Atlas telescope in Chile, two days after its passage closest to the earth, the asteroid YR4 measures approximately 60 meters in diameter and has a probability of 4.3 % to collide with the moon.

If such an impact occurred, it would be visible to the naked eye, the professor of astronomy and physics at the Western Ontario D Universityr Pair of being sized.

Although such a collision would not represent any danger for the earth, it could damage certain satellites. It would be the biggest impact on the moon in 5000 years, and it would generate up to 238 pounds (108 kilograms) of lunar debris.

“We do not expect large rocks or anything bigger than a piece of sugar, and our atmosphere will protect us very well against that. But these debris travel faster than a ball, so if they were to hit a satellite, it could cause damage, “said the astronomer.

The space nevertheless remains essential for the proper functioning of our societies, particularly in terms of communication. A collision with the Moon could therefore represent a certain risk for humanity, according to the chief scientist at Comspoc, a company specializing in the surveillance of the Dan Oltrogge space.

“The space today affects almost all aspects of our life, whether it be trade, communications, travel, industry, education or social networks. Thus, loss of access to space and its good use represents a serious risk for humanity, “he told CNN media.
