Even if its name suggests the opposite, Openai is best known for its owner models. Indeed, the last time it proposed an open language model was at the exit of GPT-2 in 2019 (before the launch of Chatgpt in 2022). But, Tuesday, the Chatgpt creator launched two new models of AI so -called “Open Weights”, an intermediate form which is between open source and owner technologies.
These two new models are GPT-OS-120B and GPT-OS-20B, under Apache 2.0 license. The interest of these two new models is that they can be downloaded for free and that developers can then run them on their own infrastructure. Quite heavy, GPT-OS-120B requires an 80 GB GPU. On the other hand, GPT-OS-20B can operate locally on a device with only 16 GB of RAM memory.
gpt-oss is out!
we made an open model that performs at the level of o4-mini and runs on a high-end laptop (WTF!!)
(and a smaller one that runs on a phone).
super proud of the team; big triumph of technology.

Little latency and no need for the internet
In addition to the fact that developers can use these models for free, local operation allows you to use an AI with little latency and without internet connection. However, developers will also be able to use GPT-OS-120B and GPT-OS-20B on the infrastructure of third-party cloud service providers, such as Azure, Hugging Face, AWS, etc.
Level Performances, OpenAi indicates that the GPT-OS-15B model is almost equivalent to the O4-Mini of Chatgpt model on reasoning benchmarks. As for GPT-OS-20B, it allows you to have results similar to O3-Mini, while operating locally. In any case, although these models are efficient, they do not replace the owner technologies that Optai offers on Chatgpt or that developers can operate via the paid API. “For developers who want fully customizable models that they can refine and deploy in their own environments, GPT-OS is an ideal solution. For those looking for multimodal support, integrated tools and transparent integration with our platform, the models available via our API platform remain the best option“Indicates Openai. For the curious people who wish to install GPT-OS-20B on a computer, know that Openai has already published a tutorial to do so via software called Ollama.

- Openai released her first “Open Weight” language models in six years
- GPT-OS-120B and GPT-OS-20B are free and open, and one of these models can even work locally on a computer
- Although these models have impressive performance, they do not replace OpenAi owner technologies
