“The crisis in Gaza violates all the principles of human dignity”: rectors of universities call on the government to act

Palestine heavily criticizes the Israeli Gaza occupation plan: “A new escalation”

The recent food air lags organized by Belgium should not “divert our attention on the immense magnitude of this food and health crisis, which can only be attenuated by a total cease-fire and the land route of unconditional humanitarian aid”, they argue.

Annick Castiaux (Unamur), Philippe Dubois (Umons), Anne-Sophie Nyssen (Uliège), Annemie Schaus (ULB), Françoise Smets (UClouvain) and their Flemish colleagues also ask the Arizona government to firmly condemn “inhuman violence” in the occupied Palestinian territories and to decide “other actions” country.

In addition, they reiterate their appeal in favor of an immediate suspension of the association agreement between the EU and Israel. “Respect for human rights and democratic values must underpin any cooperation with third countries. If this foundation is systematically flouted, the consequences must follow. Otherwise, our European values are likely to become vain for meaning,” they insist.

Washington’s tacit support in Israel on his plan in Gaza: “I really can’t say”

The rectors underline that they are not alone in launching this call for action while voices also rise in Israel to denounce the “unbearable” character of the situation. They refer in particular to the presidents of several Israeli universities, including that of Tel Aviv. These institutions “recognize the immense damages inflicted on children and infants and insist on the moral imperative for the Israeli government to respond to the drama in Gaza”.

The rectors conclude by urging the authorities, specifically the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to “do everything” to ensure the success of what the UN Secretary General described as a “test of our shared humanity”. “A test for which we cannot afford to fail,” said António Guterres.
