A World Summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI) must take place in Switzerland, in Geneva precisely, in 2027. The Federal Council spoke on Wednesday in favor of such an organization.
(Keystone-ATS) The government has managed the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) to initiate the necessary preparations, he said in a statement. These include collaborating with India which organizes the next summit, scheduled for early 2026. A collaboration with other actors from scientific and economic circles is also envisaged.
The Federal Council is currently considering that additional financial means on the part of the Confederation are not necessary. Resources should be able to be offset within the framework of the existing budget as well as through third parties and sponsorship contributions. The DETEC and the DFAE must have a detailed budget by early 2026.
IA opportunities and risks
Since the end of 2023, a series of high -level vertices on AI have taken place in different countries in order to allow an exchange on the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence for society or in areas such as medicine, climate or agriculture, recalls the Federal Council.
And to note that the organization of such a summit would allow Switzerland to engage in a constructive manner in the current debate on the use and international governance of artificial intelligence, while affirming its role as a center of research and strong and dynamic innovation. This would also highlight the importance of international law and fundamental rights in the development and use of AI.
The first three summits took place in Bletchley Park (United Kingdom) in 2023, in Seoul (South Korea) in 2024 and Paris (France) in 2025. Federal adviser Albert Rösti was present in Bletchley and Paris, where he had already underlined the interest of Switzerland to welcome an upcoming summit.
