A big peak Wednesday, a small respite on Thursday, then the heat that starts upwards: Switzerland is about to experience a sustainable heat wave. And to hope to breathe a little, you may have to go to sleep in Brévine …

Heat wave, the return. While June is coming to an end, Switzerland enters a high heat sequence that could last. This Wednesday, June 25, promises to be the highest point of this first thermal offensive, with temperatures that can reach 35 degrees in the plain, especially on the Geneva or Sion side.

At altitude too, the thermometer climbs: we wait 30 degrees in Crans-Montana (1500 m) and 26 at the Dôle, enough to tickle certain records very seriously. In the high mountains, the zero degree limit could fly up to 5,000 to 5,200 meters this weekend.

A false respite Thursday … before a flame return

Good news? A storm front should cross the country overnight Wednesday to Thursday, bringing some localized precipitation and a relative drop in temperatures. “We will lose about 5 to 6 degrees on Thursday, but without real feeling of freshness, because the atmosphere will remain heavy and unstable,” explains Frédéric Glassey, meteorologist at Meteonews. In other words, it will be between 28 and 30 degrees, with an impression of reinforced dampness.

But this break will be short -lived. As of Friday, temperatures will start upwards: between 29 and 33 degrees of the Central Valais plateau, then 31 to 35 for Saturday, even if the kiss could limit the furnace a little in places.

And the rest? Until next Tuesday, no surprises: it will be very hot. Then the scenarios diverge. Some projections suggest continuing heat, others a slightly more stormy trend accompanied by a small drop in temperatures. “In any case, we will not dive into a polar climate,” warns Frédéric Glassey.

“We will also stay above seasonal averages”

Tropical nights, but not everywhere

With such high temperatures during the day, the night is also likely to be painful, especially on the edge of the lakes; The minimums will be able to descend under the 20 degrees. Thanks to the presence of the lake, the mercury panicked, however, a little less during the day than in the valley funds.

Conversely, in areas like Sion, although the day is burning, temperatures fall to 18 at night, which offers a little respite. Not enough, however, to talk about freshness.

It is precisely the persistence of these temperatures above seasonal normal that leads meteorologists to speak of heat waves.

And for the rest of the summer?

Out of the next 5 to 6 weeks and beyond, weekly and seasonal trends are unanimous: Switzerland should experience a hotter summer than the average, also in July and August.

“This does not necessarily mean that every day will be scorching or that there are necessarily waves of heat, but the anomaly of heat seems well installed.”

The specialist recalls that a “normal” July in French-speaking Switzerland, according to the 1990-2020 standard, has 5 to 7 days of precipitation, with at least one millimeter in rain. Note that 10 minutes of downpour in Lausanne, with 1.2 millimeter of water, are enough to be considered a rainy day. This will not be the case over the next 10 days a priori, with an exception for Thursday.

“Suffice to say that the current scenario – sequence of dry, sunny and warm days – is an anomaly for the Swiss climate.”

And if not, where to flee?

If you are looking for a freshness plan, there are some options. Sleeping in Brévine, “Switzerland Siberia” can be a good idea. This Tuesday morning, he made 6 degrees there – Royal. But beware, during the day, the mercury rises quickly, up to 24 degrees at 3 p.m., as in Chaux-de-Fonds. Same altitude, same punishment. So to refresh yourself, it is better to get up early.

And if you have vacation, go walk early in the morning in the valley funds, in the shade, along the rivers. Or, better still: fleeing the country squarely, underlines the meteorologist.

“Right now, Scandinavia, Poland, the Baltic countries or Ireland record temperatures below the seasonal averages”

Frédéric Glassey

In summary? Switzerland hot, will remain hot, and nothing suggests a brutal change. No cool on the horizon, but some punctual thunderstorms to remind us that the atmosphere has not completely lost the ball. And if all that becomes too much, don’t forget: Brévine at night, Sweden during the day.

Rail must increase its market share in international travel: this is what several Swiss elected officials require, in particular thanks to new direct links between cities. But the project could come up against European rail reality.

Nearly 32,000 people traveled by train between Switzerland and foreigners, on average, on average, last year. This represents 11.6 million passengers per year, not to mention cross -border workers and shopping enthusiasts with our neighbors. A constantly increased figure in recent years.
