The hypnotizing images of a rare “roller cloud” caused by the heat wave

An impressive cloud formed Monday June 30, 2025 in Cabo Da Roca, Portugal. This rare meteorological phenomenon has been amplified by hot weather.

A huge “roller cloud” was deployed above Cabo Da Roca, west of Lisbon in Portugal, the most western point on the European continent. Aerial images of this rare meteorological phenomenon captured by AFP show a cottony sea which spreads on Portuguese cliffs.

On social networks, witnesses have also reported that they have noted the phenomenon from the beach. Some were afraid in front of the cloud which took on the air of gigantic white wave rushing on the bathers.

Up to several kilometers long

This cloud is known as “arcus” and intensified by strong heat. It is formed by the interaction between masses of air at contrasting temperatures and sea breezes, especially when it is much warmer on the ground than in the sky. This type of cloud can measure several kilometers long.

Portugal is particularly affected by the heat wave in force in the south of Europe: peaks of 44 ° C are expected there at the start of the week. Several regions of the country, including Lisbon, were placed on a red alert until Monday evening. The alert is now in yellow on Tuesday.
