A particularly critical situation. Some 50,000 inhabitants have been evacuated in 41 localities in the Izmir region, west of Turkey, since Sunday, June 29, due to violent fires which ravage the region. Vegetation lights fueled by winds reaching 40 to 50 km/h in places.
More than 1,000 rescuers are currently mobilized, helped by numerous helicopters and bombers, said the Minister of Forests, Ibrahim Yumakli, in Al Jazeera. Residents are mobilizing alongside them, some having been photographed using their tractors to transport water.
Adnan Menderes d’Izmir airport has suspended its activities.
At least two fire starts
The first fire broke out on Sunday between the districts of Seferihisar and Menderes in Izmir, spreading quickly due to winds up to 117 km/h according to Governor Suleyman Elban. Another fire broke out in a Gaziemir discharge, 13 km from the center of Izmir, spreading to neighboring forests and threatening the Otokent industrial area.
