The last Nintendo console is very promising on its territory of origin. The Switch 2 has already sold more than 1.1 million consoles on the crucial territory of Japan, exceeding the figures of the less popular PlayStation 5 console, and the entire Xbox Series range of Microsoft.

Despite the considerable limitations for the supply of the Nintendo Switch 2, the portable console has succeeded in dominating on its territory of origin, Japan, with more than a million sales during the first two weeks. This places it comfortably in front of certain variants of Sony PlayStation 5 in terms of lifetime sales, such as the digital edition of the basic model.

It also means that the console is already much more successful than combined lifetime sales of Microsoft Series S and X consoles, which are still confined to a distant third place in the war of consoles in Japan.

The opinion of the community of players was divided concerning the alleged improvements of the Switch 2 compared to the Switch before its launch. The Nintendo Switch 2 does not have the easy task when it comes to imitating the success of its predecessor, but it seems to hold its rank.

This may have been facilitated by the fact that Nintendo wanted to win directly on its internal market: the new console is currently sold at a price of $ 450 for a unit in the United States, but at the price of ¥ 49,980 (~ $ 343) in Japan for its regional unit, a reduction of just under 16 % compared to the first.

While the initial reports last week indicated that the Switch 2 had crossed the million units bar sold on its original territory, we now have confirmation thanks to an article in the Japanese Famitsu video game magazine which also publishes similar statistics for other consoles on the territory.

The following equipment sales estimates are published on site (translated with Google Translate):

Nintendo’s strong position in Japan is no secret, the Japanese video game giant having managed to impose itself on the territory with all the major consoles that it has launched in the past, including the Wii U console, whose performance has been mediocre. The Microsoft Xbox console has catastrophic results compared to Sony and Nintendo consoles in the region, because it does not benefit from the regional subsidy enjoyed by competing consoles. Sony, however, reduced this grant lately by increasing the price of the PS5 by September 2024 by 20 %.

Part of the success of Nintendo can however be attributed to its larger large margins (5 % against 2 % usually) offered to retailers, in addition to the retrocompatibility with the digital and physical supports purchased previously, as well as with the old joy-cons and pro controllers.

Globally, the Nintendo Switch 2 console has sold around 3.5 million consoles (on June 9), as Nintendo confirmed in a press release at the beginning of the month, indicating high global demand and a solid pipeline of pre -order.
