The number of farms continued to decrease in 2024 in Belgium, both north and in the south of the country, according to figures published Thursday by Statbel on the eve of the opening of the Libramont agricultural fair.

Belgium counted, in 2024, 33,973 farms with agricultural production, which represents a drop of 0.8% compared to 2023. This movement is not new and the erosion of the number of farms is confirmed from year to year, against a background to the enlargement of the average surface of farms.

The decline is observed in both Wallonia and Flanders, where it is however more pronounced. In the south of the country, there were 12,381 farms last year, compared to 12,423 in 2023 (-0.34%). To the north, 21,514 farms were identified in 2024 against 21,759 in 2023 (-1.13%).

Only the Brussels Region sees the number, certainly modest, of its farms increasing: it went from 67 in 2023 to 78 in 2024.

At the same time, the agricultural area in Belgium remained identical last year compared to 2023.
