The number of hotel nights progresses in July

School staff continue to grow, year after year, in the city of Geneva. 13,075 children took the way to primary school on Monday, 150 more than in 2024. Since 2012, the number of students in primary school has increased by 21%.

School infrastructure is under tension. To respond to the demographic explosion, two important sites started, indicated in front of the media the administrative advisor Marjorie de Chastonay. One concerns the renovation and extension of the Liotard school, with ultimately the provision of 25 classrooms.

The other major project concerns the new school of Vernets. The end of the work was scheduled for spring 2026 and was to coincide with the arrival of new residents of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the site has been late, noted Ms. de Chastonay. The establishment will only welcome students in 2027.

Provisional pavilions

Faced with this setback, caused in particular by late deliveries of certain materials, the City of Geneva is working on transitional solutions for the 2026-2027 school year. Provisional pavilions sheltering 12 classes will be installed at Boissonnas Street for a year.

Currently, it is not possible to ignore the pavilions that already equip several schools, underlined Ms. de Chastonay. In terms of infrastructure, the City of Geneva provides for the construction of the School of Wonderlet, which should open by 2028. The establishment’s capacity will be 17 classes.

Architectural competitions will also be launched soon to enlarge and modernize the schools of the Charmilles and Charles-Giron. A credit of around fifty million francs will also make it possible to finance the renovation and the enlargement of 28 restaurants and school refectories by 2030.
