An experience in Italian Switzerland has given amazing results. This could help the most affected regions to get rid of this insect that can convey serious illnesses.

Originally from Southeast Asia, the tiger mosquito has gradually settled in Switzerland in recent years, especially in Valais.

The canton of Ticino is particularly affected. Its bites are not only unpleasant, they can also transmit dangerous pathogens, such as dengue, zika and chikungunya.

This is why the Confederation decided to act. As reported by SRFa first small -scale test turned out to be conclusive enough for the method to be extended.

The strategy, to say the least, is to release mosquitoes of this type in invaded areas. But only sterile males. Diego Parrondo Monton, scientific collaborator of the project, explains to the SRF:

“They fly away in search of females, and when they find one, they pursue it until coupling”

As a result, the vast majority of females lay non -fertilized eggs, which leads to a significant fall in the population.

By the end of September, up to 500,000 sterile males will be released in a sector of the Losone commune (TI) equivalent to 17 football fields. Already now, according to Diego Parrondo Monton, the local population has decreased by more than 40%.

This is not the first time that this technique has been used in Ticino. Last year, Eleonora Flacio, biologist at the specialized high school in Italian Switzerland (SUPSI) and project manager, had conducted a similar test in Morcote. Impressive result because the population of Tigers mosquitoes had dropped by more than 90%.

In Losone, Eleonora Flacio is even more optimistic:

“If everything is going well, the population could fall to zero. In other words, we could reach 100 % efficiency ”

It would be a decisive step towards a lasting fight against mosquitoes in the most affected regions. (Leo)
