The port of Churchill is “ready to become a major commercial asset” for Canada

During a press conference held on Tuesday, the Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) announced that major modernization work is underway so that the port of Churchill and the rail line along Hudson bay can better serve the interests of Canada.

A second weekly freight train now circulates on the railway of Hudson’s Bay. The port of Churchill is ready to become a major commercial asset for Canadasaid Chris Avery, director of the Arctic Gateway Group.

He emphasizes that the railway from Hudson Bay has been in its best condition today for over 30 years.

Mr. Avery claims that current investments are preparing the field for sustainable development.

A new installation of storage of critical minerals has also been built and is now completed at the port of Churchill.

According to Chris Avery, this new installation will triple the storage capacity of critical minerals from the port of Churchill. It can also meet the storage needs of other raw materials, such as certain types of potash.

The director of the Arctic Gateway Group estimates that this infrastructure will allow the port of Churchill to better position itself as an essential hub for resource exports. Manitoba, Nunavut and Western Canada have large reserves of essential minerals, says Avery.

By increasing the storage capacities of the port of Churchill, we will be able to better meet the needs of Canadian producers of essential minerals, which are looking for new reliable trade routes.

Now that the rail network is operational again, modernization work will focus on port facilities, including the reloading of the quay.

The first refueling ship of the 2025 season has also arrived at the port of Churchill during the weekend, transporting goods and products intended for the Kivalliq region, in Nunavut.

The Arctic Gateway Group, Aboriginal company in Manitoba, is responsible for the exploitation of the port of Churchill. It is the only maritime port of the Canadian Arctic connected to the rail network, by the railway of Hudson’s Bay, which links The Pas to Churchill.
