The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, escapes censorship

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, on July 8, 2025.

Unsurprisingly, the motion of censorship against the president of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was not adopted on Thursday July 10, in the European Parliament. Initiated by the Romanian nationalist MEP Gheorghe Piperea (AUR), this motion was rejected by 360 MEPs, against 175 votes for, and 18 abstentions. More than 160 elected officials have not taken part in the vote, a certain sign of the distrust that exists today towards the head of the community executive.

“While external forces seek to destabilize and divide us, it is our duty to react in accordance with our values. Thank you and long live Europe ”reacted Ursula von der Leyen when the results were announced. The analysis of votes, nominal, makes it possible to better measure the moving land on which the president of the commission must now advance her agenda in the European Parliament, where the nationalists have never been as numerous as since the European elections of June 2024.

The majority on which she counts to have her bills adopted-PPE conservatives, Social Democrats (S&D) and Renew Liberals-has never been solid. We could see him during the vote on his team, November 27, 2024: a commission had never been so badly elected, with votes from the far right to the Greens and defections in all the camps of his traditional allies.
