The price of supplies fell, according to Familles de France

The start of the new school year is fast approaching, the Families de France association notes on Monday, August 18, a drop in prices for school supplies. Good news that affects all categories.

The price of school supplies is decreasing this year for students who enter college, this Families de France association reported on Monday, August 18 on the basis of an annual barometer, welcoming a “more stable” economic context.

“In 2025, the average basket amounted to 211.10 euros, against 223.46 euros in 2024”, summarizes Familles de France. “This represents a drop of 12.36 euros, or -5.53 % compared to last year.”

This barometer, produced for forty years, is carried out by assessing the average cost of a basket of school supplies requested from a student entering the sixth grade.

“For the first time in several years, all of the physical distribution circuits record a drop in prices”, specifies the association, noting a decline in hypermarkets (-8.09%) and supermarkets (-2.98%) as in specialized stores (-4.75%) and online (-3.82%).

While the decline was the most marked in 2024 for stationery items, this year is the sporting items that recorded the strongest decline (-8.59%). But all categories are decreasing.

The back -to -school allowance paid on Tuesday

“This improvement is explained by a more stable economic context: inflation contained around 1%, drop in energy and transport costs, relaxation on raw materials (paper, plastics)”, explains the association.

But this decline in the amount paid “also reflects an evolution of purchase behavior: anticipation, comparison, search for promotions and reduction of waste”, continues Familles de France.

This barometer is published on the eve of the payment by the CAF of the back -to -school allowance. This, which benefits some three million households, is intended for the most modest families whose children go from 6 to 18 years. It represents around 450 euros with a few variations depending on age.

This allowance “remains an essential aid to support the schooling of 5 million children”, insists Families de France.
