The UN is “scandalized” after the attack which killed at least 57 civilians on Monday in El-Facher and in the Abou Chouk camp in Sudan. Wednesday in Geneva, the High Commissioner for Human Rights said that his office was following the charges of displaced executions.
(Keystone-ATS) “It is with dismay that we have again seen an unthinkable horror for civilians in El-Facher,” says the Austrian. “These repeated attacks” ask serious questions about violations of international humanitarian law (DIH) and are “entirely unacceptable and must stop”, according to him.
The paramilitaries of the rapid support forces (FSR) have on numerous occasions the displaced camps in El-Facher and in the surrounding territories. The Abu Chouk site was attacked at least 16 times by this group between January and June, causing more than 210 victims.
“I once again sound the alarm on the serious threat of persecution motivated by ethnic reasons,” added the High Commissioner. Members of the High Commissioner recently discussed with more than 150 survivors of an attack on the Zamzam camp a few months ago. They corroborated previous indications of killings, widespread rapes, forced disappearances or torture.
Humanitarian breaks
The Austrian again asks the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and he enjoins them to establish humanitarian breaks in the besieged territories. Officials of violations must be prosecuted, according to him.
The mission of establishing facts has repeatedly denounced on the part of the paramilitaries of acts equivalent to crimes against humanity. The Sudanese army was reproached for possible war crimes.
In addition to two years of conflict, tens of thousands of people were killed, including at least 4,300 civilians last year, according to the UN. Regions are exposed to famine.
The conflict made nearly 13 million displaced, including more than four million refugees. In total, 25 million people are seriously hungry and 40% of the population urgently need health assistance. Tens of millions of individuals must be helped.
