Biganos Smurfit Westrock’s Smurfit Westrock has just put its new treatment plant into service.
An investment of 12.5 million euros in the context of a more general approach to reduce the impact of the factory on the environment and anticipate climate change. 42 million in total have been invested since 2018 to decarbonize, depolluate and create internal valuation sectors.
A new treatment station
The new treatment station (old installations + new equipment) has a processing capacity of around 200,000 equivalents-accommodation (this station could treat the effluents of a city of ± 200,000 inhabitants).
This installation includes in particular:
- A 2,000 m³ methanizer,
- An activated sludge process, composed of a 3,300 m³ airy basin, a 4,200 m³ separator,
- as well as a sludge dehydration unit.
The biogas generated by methanization is valued directly on the site, in substitution of natural gas, to supply the lime oven. This substitution contributes to strengthening the already well -committed decarbonation strategy of the factory. 15% of energy needs are substituted by biogas. And already 94% of CO2 emissions are biogenic, that is to say captured by the environment and are therefore considered to have a neutral impact.
Smurfit is also looking for innovative solutions to save water with the support of young start-ups. The objective is to anticipate climate change and in particular periods of water shortage.
