The images are striking. Friday, in Indonesia, Mont Lewotobi Laki-Laki (1,584 meters), located on the island of Florès, erupted at 8:48 p.m. local time (2:48 p.m., French schedule), as the national volcanology agency said in a press release. The height of the plume “was measured at around 10,000 m above the summit”. No victim or damage has been reported at present.
Activities stopped around the volcano
Tourists and the local population have been instructed to avoid any activity within a radius of 6 km around the volcano, said the chief of the Muhammad Wafid agency. According to the latter, an accumulation of gas in recent weeks is the source of this spectacular event. However, it has alerted that in the event of heavy rains, it is possible that lahars arise (muddy torrential flows of volcanic origin), mudslides or debris composed of volcanic materials, particularly dangerous for communities close to rivers.
